Celebrating 10 Years of Our Community Shop 🎉

On 28th January 2026 evening, our village hall was filled with laughter, conversation, and more than a little pride as we came together to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of our community shop.

What started a decade ago as a bold idea backed by local determination has grown into a much-loved hub at the heart of village life. Judging by the fantastic turnout, it’s clear just how much the shop means to so many people.

A Wonderful Turnout

From long-standing volunteers and founding supporters to newer residents, the hall was buzzing from the moment the doors opened. Tables were dotted with old friends catching up, new connections being made, and plenty of shared memories about the early days of the shop.

The atmosphere was warm, relaxed, and full of community spirit — exactly what the shop has stood for over the past ten years.

Speeches and Reflections

A highlight of the evening was a series of short speeches reflecting on the journey so far.

Simon Reece spoke about the shop’s beginnings and the determination of the original team who worked tirelessly to turn the idea into reality. He reflected on the challenges faced in those early days and how community support made all the difference.

Penny Colwill shared stories about the people behind the counter and behind the scenes — the volunteers whose time, energy, and friendliness have helped make the shop more than just a place to buy essentials. Her words were a heartfelt reminder that the shop’s greatest strength has always been its people.

We also heard thoughtful words from John Cozens, who spoke about the shop’s wider role in the village — not just as a business, but as a meeting place, an information point, and a symbol of what a community can achieve when it works together.

Together, the speakers painted a picture of resilience, cooperation, and local pride that had many in the audience nodding in agreement.

Food, Drink, and Celebration

Of course, no celebration would be complete without good food and drink. Guests enjoyed a delicious spread, with plenty of homemade contributions from committee members that showcased the talent within our community. Glasses were raised in a toast to the shop’s success — and to its future.

A special highlight of the evening was the anniversary cake, proudly cut by volunteer Sylvia Healey as everyone gathered round. Decorated to mark ten years of the shop, it didn’t last long — a sweet symbol of the shared effort and success worth celebrating.

The evening struck just the right balance between reflection and celebration, honouring the hard work of the past while looking ahead with optimism.

Looking to the Future

Ten years on, the community shop remains a shining example of what can be achieved when people come together with a shared purpose. The anniversary evening wasn’t just about looking back — it was also a reminder that the shop’s story is still being written.

Thank you to everyone who helped organise such a special event, to those who spoke so warmly, and to everyone who came along to celebrate. Most of all, thank you to every volunteer, supporter, and customer who has played a part over the last decade.

Here’s to the next ten years. 🥂
